1976年6月29日、ニューポート・ジャズ・フェスティバルでRetrospective of the Music of Herbie Hancock（ハービー・ハンコックの追想）というプログラムが組まれた。そして、そのライブがV.S.O.P. = Very Special Onetime Performanceというタイトルでアルバム化された。だが、1回だけでは終わらず、V.S.O.P.はある種のプロジェクト名となり、3年間続くことになった。
本作は、77年の全米ツアーからのライブ演奏。一発勝負のライブに賭ける彼等5人は、常に最高のパフォーマンスを演じた。「怒涛」とか「疾走」という言葉が似あう。最終的には、4枚のライブアルバムと1枚のスタジオアルバムを残し70年代後半を駆け抜けた。自分自身も79年7月の田園コロシアムでのライブに行き、学生生活に終止符を打った。
