CD帯に「生誕75周年記念」とある。現役のディランに対して、この表現はいかがなものか。当の本人が75歳になった記念で作ったアルバムでないことは確か。そして「俺の切り札」とも記載。これはジャケット写真からのイメージ・コピーなのだろう。ディランは、計算尽くして切り札で勝負してきたミュージシャンではない。安っぽいコピーに呆れてしまう。輸入盤を買えば良かったとちょっと後悔。

まぁそれはそれとしてアルバムの中身。第一印象、これはディランの艶歌。哀愁が漂う。ラストの曲がジャズでよく取り上げられる「カム・レイン・オア・カム・シャイン」。雨が降っても陽が差しても、それはそれでいいじゃないか、オレは唄い続けるだけだね。そうディランは締め括ったのではないか。

しかしである。ジャズの世界ではカバーとか掘り起こしといった感覚はない。なぜならば、それらは材料でしかないからだ。材料をどう料理するかに、ある意味で命を賭けるのがジャズマン。ディランは、フォークとロックの世界で数多くの金字塔を打ち立てて来た。ジャズの範疇に位置付けられた曲を歌いたかったのだろうが、「陽の光を当てた」とはおこがましい。ましてや、ジャケットをブルーノート風にするとは。まぁ、ディランらしく、それまで通りやりたいことをやったアルバムなのである。
