1949年8月と51年5月のセッションを組み合わせたアルバム。49年がファッツ・ナヴァロとソニー・ロリンズが参加したクインテット。51年がピアノトリオである。ただし、6曲目の別テイクIt Could Happen To Youはピアノソロ。同日録音の本テイクは、Vol.2に収録されている。

バド・パウエルの天才的なピアノプレイは、言葉ではなかなか表現できない。敢えて言葉にすれば、「こう来て欲しいな」と思った時に「えっ？そう来るの」という感じ。つまり、同じアルバムを何度聴いても、自分の体の中に化学反応が起きるからだ。Amazingと名付けてしまったアルバムタイトル。短いセンテンスだけに邦題を付けるのは難しいが、「やるなぁ、パウエル！」でどうだろうか。

バド・パウエル初期の2回のセッションを1枚にまとめたアルバム。猛スピードのピアノを堪能できる。1950年7月はピアノトリオ（4曲）、51年2月はピアノソロ（8曲）。タイトル通りにGeniusなのだが、パウエルのソロ音源は極めて少ないので、タイトルはGeniusよりもSoloを強調すべきだった。

Wikipediaで調べたところ、1956年の最初のリリースではBud Powell's Moodsというタイトルだった。1970年代半ばに再発されるとき、今のタイトルになったらしい。モンクのアルバムGenius Of Modern Musicを意識したのだろう。5曲目から9曲目まではパウエルの作品。その中で、Parisian Thoroughfareは、クリフォード・ブラウンが2枚のアルバムで録音。さらに、HallucinationsはキースがアルバムWhisper Notで、マイルスはBudoというタイトルでアルバムBirth Of The Coolで録音している。パウエルは優れた作曲家であったことも分かるのだ。

バド・パウエルは1924年9月27日生まれ（66年7月31日没）。42年間の生涯であった。この録音は、25と26歳のときの2つのセッションをまとめたもの。バラードの演奏はもちろんのこと、鍵盤の上を縦横無尽に動き回るアップテンポの演奏には圧倒される。それを支えているのは、マックス・ローチのドラム。

パウエル自身の作品が5曲挿入されているが、スピード感溢れる1曲目のTempus Fugue-Itはその一つ。タイトルの意味が不明で、Wikipediaで調べたらこうあった。Its title is a pun on the Latin phrase tempus fugit, meaning "time flies". （ラテン語のtempus fugitの駄洒落で「光陰矢の如し」の意味）。時の流れだけでなく、譜面上を泳ぐオタマジャクシも物凄く速い。
