Gonzalo Rubalcaba and I met at the jazz festival called Jazz Plaza in Havana in 1986. Since that time, we've become very close friends and performed and recorded together many times. Several years ago, I told Gonzalo that someday I would like to record an album of Cuban ballads (boleros) with him. The songs chosen for this recording are those that I feel are among the most beautiful that I have heard of that musical tradition. Also included are some original compositions of ours. I am honored to have played this music with Gonzalo. His music is beyond category. He put so much love and dedication into this project writing the arrangements and orchestrations, not to mention his magnificent playing. - Charlie Haden, January, 2001.
The gentleness of his spirit and his music move me in a profound way, and since then there have been numerous occasions for us to share our admiration and our creative mission. I would like to thank Charlie not only for trusting me and showing his affectionate relationship with Cuba and its music, but also for the sincerity and sympathy with which he committed himself to this production. His attitude, devoid of prejudice, is also shared by all those associated with the project: musicians, producers, engineers, friends and relations. - Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Coral Springs, February 2001.
