このアルバムについて、ディランはこう語っている。「私はこれらの曲はどう見てもカバーとは思っていない。実際カバーされすぎて本質が埋もれてしまっている。私とバンドがやっていることは、基本的にその覆い（カバー）を外す作業だ。本質を埋められた墓場から掘り起こして、陽の光を当てたのさ」。掘り起こされたのは、ここに収録された10曲。

しかしである。ジャズの世界ではカバーとか掘り起こしといった感覚はない。なぜならば、それらは材料でしかないからだ。材料をどう料理するかに、ある意味で命を賭けるのがジャズマン。ディランは、フォークとロックの世界で数多くの金字塔を打ち立てて来た。ジャズの範疇に位置付けられた曲を歌いたかったのだろうが、「陽の光を当てた」とはおこがましい。ましてや、ジャケットをブルーノート風にするとは。まぁ、ディランらしく、それまで通りやりたいことをやったアルバムなのである。

とんでもないアルバムである。いや、アルバムというより、1969年から71年の間におけるディランの全てが分かる事典のようなもの。4枚のCDで全77曲。アウトテイク、別テイク、未発表曲を集めたブートレッグ・シリーズ第10弾。3枚目は、1969年8月31日ワイト島音楽祭でのパフォーマンス。4枚目は、オリジナル『セルフ・ポートレイト』の最新リマスター。

そして、150ページの写真集、写真がたっぷり挿入された解説本（英語）、日本語の解説と訳詞の冊子が同梱されている。完全生産限定盤。お値段は消費税込で19,800円である。パッケージの総重量1,455グラム。やっぱり事典。

人権擁護団体アムネスティ・インターナショナルの創立50周年、そしてボブ・ディランのデビュー50周年を祝って企画され、2012年初めにリリースされたアルバム。4枚組、ディランの作品全73曲（トラディショナルと合作を1曲ずつ含む）、トータル5時間13分26秒。ディラン自身が唄っているのは最後のChimes of Freedom（自由の鐘）のみ。73曲の中に出来不出来があるのは事実だが、このアルバムを企画し、50周年に合わせてリリースしたことに驚きを感じる。ご立派。
