2014年4月に購入。2枚組CDでコンプリート盤、しかも1,575円という安価（送料込み）。ニューポート・ジャズ・フェスティバルのステージを完全収録。エリントンによるMCもカットされていない。

しかし、失敗した。ビッグバンド、そしてエリントン・ミュージックを聴き込んでいなくて、集中して長時間のライブ演奏を聴くのは正直辛いのだ。このアルバムは、ビッグバンドの良さがもっと分かるようになってから聴くべきアルバムだと思う。ちょっと背伸びし過ぎた。

50年代の初めに、これだけの質の高いジャズを演奏していたデューク・エリントン。恐れ入ってしまう。以下はCD帯による解説だが、瀬川昌久氏のライナーノーツによると、美空ひばりはベティ・ローシェのスキャットを勉強して「A列車」を1955年に吹込んだそうだ。日本の歌謡界にも影響を及ぼしたアルバムなのである。

「ジャズ界最大のマエストロ、デューク・エリントンを代表する不朽の名盤。凄腕ドラマー、ルイ・ベルソン在籍時代の鮮烈なパフォーマンスが、当時最先端の録音技術で克明に捉えられている。〈ザ・ムーチ〉、〈パーディド〉など往年の代表作にも新たなアレンジが施され〈A列車で行こう〉ではベティ・ローシェのスキャット・ボーカルを大きくフィーチャーした名唱中の名唱が楽しめる」。なお、録音データは諸説あるようで、必ずしも正確とは言えない。
